This a special Tibet trip that combines the famous Lhasa city and all the ancient monasteries including Potala Palace, the big lake Nam-tso and scenic northen grasslands, and the adventurous overland trip with several high passes via Everest Base Camp to Nepal.


Itinerary

DAY 01 - FLY KATHMANDU – LHASA

The panoramic Himalayan flight over the Top of the World (W/P) will be the first attraction of this trip. Upon arrival at Gongar airport, your Tibetan guide will pick you up from airport and transfer to hotel (about 95km and 2 hrs drives).

 

 DAY 02 - LHASA

Visit POTALA PALACE, JOKHANG TEMPLE and BARKHOR MARKET - morning visit Potala- one of the most famous architectural works of Tibet is erected on top of Red Hill in Lhasa. In the 7th Century after the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo's marriage with Princess Wencheng of the Tang court, the Palace was build for meditation. In the mid 17th century it was rebuilt by the 5th Dalai Lama to its present size and ever since it became the winter palace of Dalai Lamas. The construction took fifty years from its beginning to completion.

The tour continues to Jokhang Temple-situated in the center of the old section of Lhasa. It was built in the mid 7th century A. D. and later extended by successive rulers; it has now become a gigantic architectural complex. Located in the east, facing to west, it is a four-storied temple with splendid golden temple. Late afternoon explore around the famous Barkhor market (shopping street)…O/N

 

 DAY 03 - LHASA

Visit DREPUNG MONASTERY, SERA MONASTERY and NORBULINGKA -morning visit Drepung - Situated 5 km distance to the western suburb of Lhasa at foot of Mt Ganpoi Ute. Drepung monastery was founded in 146 by Jamyang Choje a disciple of Tsongkapa the founder of Gelukpa Sect. The monastery occupying an area of 250000 square meters with a fixed number of 7700 monks is the largest monastery in Tibet. The monastery keeps plentiful historical relics, Buddhist scriptures arts and crafts.

The tour continues to sera monastery-situated 3 km distance to the northern suburb of Lhasa. Sera monastery was founded in 1419 by Jamchen Choje a disciple of Tsongkapa, the Gelugpa sect. The monastery is erected grandly at a mountain slope with a colorful architecture. Sera monastery together with Ganden and Dprerung monastery in Lhasa are known as the three great monasteries in Tibet. Also visit Norbulingka, the summer Palace of Dalai Lama. O/N

 

DAY 04 - LHASA – NAM-TSO LAKE EXCURSION

Full day’s excursions trip to the famous lake Nam-Tso and scenic northern Grassland… (6-7 hrs).

 

 DAY 05- DRIVE LHASA – GYANTSE

The most important attraction for today is Yamdro-tso Lake and Kubum monastery in Gyantse. From the top of the pass kangpa-la at 4700m high in clear weather, you can see the fabulous shade of deep turquoise, Yamdro-tso Lake is shaped like coiling scorpion with deep blue in colour. Kubum monastery, means 100,000 images in Tibetan, is the town's foremost attraction, the 35m-high chorten (stupa) with its white layers trimmed with decorative stripes and its crown-like golden dome, is awe-inspiring. You can visit every chamber in the monastery.

 

 DAY 06- DRIVE GYANTSE – XIGATSE

Shigatse(12,600 ft.) is most famous for its Tashilhumpo monastery - the seat of Panchen Lama, who is regarded as reincarnation of the Buddha of endless enlightenment. Items of interest inside this monastery built in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama are the relics of Sakyamuni, the hall of Maitreya, and a mind-boggling collection of thankas, frescoes and statues. While Tashilhunpo’s magnificent outside leaves you gasp in admiration, the inside of this monastery introduces you more religious tranquility and sincerity. There is a bustling `free' market at the foot of the ruins of Xigaze fortress where one can buy local handicrafts embedded with coral and turquoise, Tibetan daggers, Chinese porcelain and yak butter.

 

 DAY 07- DRIVE SHIGATSE – XEGAR

Trip will goes via visiting Sakya - Xegar town with a population of 3000, its importance lies in the fact that it is the Center of this large and remote country and also because it is the Base from where expeditions to Mt. Everest and other peaks are Launched. Today’s route involves a high pass Gyatchu-la (5200m) and the famous Sakya before Xegar, also known as New Tingri. Refresh yourself and rest.

 

DAY 08- DRIVE XEGAR – RONGBUK (5000 M)

Drive westwards the Friendship way to Tingri. On the way you will pass the checking point with your TTB permit, travel permit and passport; your guide will purchase the entrance of Everest Base Camp.

There is about 90km bumpy road from Tingri to Rongpuk, road is under construction. From Tingri to E.B.C with the very rough road, pass the wild grassland, cross the Rapids River and high mountains. If it is in clear whether, you can have a glimpse of 4 mountains which is 8000m high or more, such as: Mt. Lhotse (8516m), Mt. Everest (8848m), Mt. Choyu (8201m), Mt Makalu (8463m).

 

DAY 09- RONGBUK- EVEREST BASE CAMP (5200m) – TINGRI

Early in the morning you can see the sun raising, the golden and soft sunshine covers the top of the Everest if the weather condition is good. You will have a day trek from Rongpuk to Everest Base Camp then back to Rongouk (6-7) hours trekking) while enjoying the extraordinary ecosystem around the Everest. Then afternoon drive from Rongpuk to Tingri.

 

DAY 10- DRIVE TINGRI – ZHANGMU- KODARI BORDER (FRIENDSHIP BRIDGE) - KATHMANDU

Today’s downhill drive with typical view of Tibetan landscape offering scenic view of the roof of the World (weather permitting) and crossing over Lalung-la pass (5050m). En route stop by Milarepa cave, the famous Buddhist mystic and composer of songs who lived in the late 11th and early 12th centuries. Zhangmu (7,000 ft) also known by its Tibetan name, Khasa, is small settlements clinging to a hillside 10-km inland from the friendship bridge.  Zhangmu now has become a major trading route between Tibet and Nepal. After Zhangmu visit, a short drive to Friendship Bridge or Kodari Border, from where your Tibetan guide will say GOOD BYE and your Nepali guide welcomes you to the Nepal side. In Nepal side apply your visas at the border immigration office and then another 4-5 hours scenic drive to Kathmandu.
