Mount Kailash Trip (23-days)

This is a special trip from Kathmandu to Tibet and the famous Mt. Kailash. You will have few days to explore the colorful valley and briefly know about Nepal before heading for Tibet. The flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa is going over the world's highest peaks. The whole trip is cultural and adventurous. Lhasa is capital and cultural hub of Tibet. Your tour includes visiting major Monasteries, Potala palace and important places in Lhasa. And the highland trip proceeds through the historical towns Gyantse, Shigatse, Lhastse, Saga, Pariyang to Mt. Kailash base Darchen from where you will start the "Parikarma or Kora" round Kailash treks -3 days and finally return to the crystal clear lake Manasarovar. Mt. Kailash is the holiest mountain on earth. For the Hindus, the mountain represents the seat of Lord Shiva, and for the Buddhist, a terrestrial projection of the cosmic Mandala of the Dyani-Buddhas and Buddhistva - the wheel of life. And holy Lake Manasarovar where the Pilgrimage takes a holy baths and then does the "Kora" of sacred Mt. Kailash. On the way back, there will be scenic overland trip via Pegutso Lake to Zhangmu border (Friendship Bridge), and to Kathmandu. At the end, you will take one-day rest at Kathmandu for your self-activities or shopping prior to your return to home or next destination.


Itinerary

DAY 01 - KATHMANDU

Upon your arrival, meet at airport and greet transfer to your hotel.

 

DAY 02 - KATHMANDU

Guided sightseeing tour of Swoyambhunath stupa (the Monkey Temple) and Patan Durbar Square (old palaces).

 

DAY 03 - KATHMANDU

Guided sightseeing tour of Boudhanath stupa, the largest Buddhist shrine, and rest day free and preparation for Tibet trip.

 

DAY 04 – KATHMANDU – LHASA

The panoramic Himalayan flight goes by the side of the Mt. Everest (view on clear weather). Our guide and staffs will meet you at Lhasa airport and transfer to Lhasa city (3600m). Evening rest for acclimatization and overnight at a medium hotel.

 

DAY 05 – LHASA TOUR

Visit Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Market - morning visit Potala- one of the most famous architectural works of Tibet is erected on top of Red Hill in Lhasa. In the 7th Century after the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo's marriage with Princess Wencheng of the Tang court, the Palace was build for meditation. In the mid 17th century it was rebuilt by the 5th Dalai Lama to its present size and ever since it became the winter palace of Dalai Lamas. The construction took fifty years from its beginning to completion.

The tour continues to Jokhang Temple-situated in the center of the old section of Lhasa. It was built in the mid 7th century A. D. and later extended by successive rulers; it has now become a gigantic architectural complex. Located in the east, facing to west, it is a four-storied temple with splendid golden temple. Late afternoon explore around the famous Barkhor market (shopping street).

 

DAY 06 – LHASA TOUR

Visit Drepung Monastery, Sera Monasteryand Norbulingka -morning visit Drepung - Situated 5 km distance to the western suburb of Lhasa at foot of Mt Ganpoi Ute. Drepung monastery was founded in 146 by Jamyang Choje a disciple of Tsongkapa the founder of Gelukpa Sect. The monastery occupying an area of 250000 square meters with a fixed number of 7700 monks is the largest monastery in Tibet. The monastery keeps plentiful historical relics, Buddhist scriptures arts and crafts.

The tour continues to sera monastery-situated 3 km distance to the northern suburb of Lhasa. Sera monastery was founded in 1419 by Jamchen Choje a disciple of Tsongkapa, the Gelugpa sect. The monastery is erected grandly at a mountain slope with a colorful architecture. Sera monastery together with Ganden and Dprerung monastery in Lhasa are known as the three great monasteries in Tibet. Also visit Norbulingka, the summer Palace of Dalai Lama.

 

DAY 07 – DRIVE LHASA – GYANTSE

The most important attraction for today is Yamdro-tso Lake and Kubum monastery in Gyantse. From the top of the pass Kangpa-la at 4700m high in clear weather, you can see the fabulous shade of deep turquoise, Yamdro-tso Lake is shaped like coiling scorpion with deep blue in colour. Kubum monastery, means 100,000 images in Tibetan, is the town's foremost attraction, The 35m-high chorten (stupa) with its white layers trimmed with decorative stripes and its crown-like golden dome, is awe-inspiring. You can visit every chamber in the monastery.

 

DAY 08 – DRIVE GYANTSE – XIGATSE

Shigatse(12,600 ft.) is most famous for its Tashilhumpo monastery - the seat of Panchen lama, who is regarded as reincarnation of the Buddha of endless enlightenment. Items of interest inside this monastery built in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama are the relics of Sakyamuni, the hall of Maitreya, and a mind-boggling collection of thankas, frescoes and statues. While Tashilhunpo’s magnificent outside leaves you gasp in admiration, the inside of this monastery introduces you more religious tranquility and sincerity. There is a bustling `free' market at the foot of the ruins of Xigaze fortress where one can buy local handicrafts embedded with coral and turquoise, Tibetan daggers, Chinese porcelain and yak butter

 

DAY 09 – XIGATSE – LHATSE OR TINGRI (4300...m)

Today the journey brings you over two high passes above 5000m with fine views if weather permit us. For lunch we stop in the small town of Lhatse. Depending on how much time we spend during the morning in Shigatse we will stay overnight in Lhatse or Tingri.

 

DAY 10 – LHATSE/TINGRI – SAGA (4450m)

Today will be a long driving day over the sandy and rocky part of the Tibetan land, along highland lakes, nomads chasing thousands of yaks and sheep keep you busy. By the late afternoon you will cross Brahma Purtra River to a typical Tibetan town, Saga for overnight.

 

DAY 11 – SAGA - PARYANG (4600m)

As usual,our trip rolls on the wide valley following rivers and grazing land of yaks and sheep. Far south you can see snow covered peaks near by you, lots of rocky peaks and sand duns give you an ideal world. Depends on season, nomads and other mobile shopkeepers are attired by beautiful traditional costume, waiting your arrival with hot tea and other supplies along the way.

 

DAY 12 – PARYANG - MANASAROVER (4558m)

The driving tour starts with full of excitement, by the late afternoon you can have the first sight of Holy Kailash Parbat and Manasarovara. Hore, a small village near by Lake Manasarover, (Manasarovara is the lake of compassion, tranquility and bliss) we will spend a night there. Overnight at a Guesthouse or camping.

 

DAY 13 – MANASAROVER – DARCHEN (4670m)

After morning time and activities/bath at the holy lake,will be heading towards Darchen. It is considered as a base camp for the Holy Kailash Parikrama. Overnight at a Guesthouse.

 

DAY 14 - KAILASH KORA/TREK - DARCHEN - DHIRA PHUK (4800-m)

The pilgrim's kora around Mount Kalaish starts and finishes in Darchen; on the first day, you will trek 6 hours from Darchen to Dhira phuk and camp at the Gompa, near the backside of holy mount Kalaish where you can see beautiful view of Kalaish.

 

DAY 15 - KAILASH KORA/TREK - DHIRA PHUK - DZUTRUL PHUK (4700…M)

Today is hardest but Holiest day of your pilgrimage Yatra with Dolma-La pass (5660m) between two valleys: the Lhachu valley and enter the Dorma chu valley, heading up to wards a high pass above the Gaurikund lake or Tuje Dzingbu (the bathing pool of compassion) which is one of the highest lakes in the world Hindu pilgrim's are Supposed to take a ritual bath here. Once you reach the top, just do the holiest offering and sit down for meditation to forget yourself.. By the late afternoon you will arrive Dzuthal Phuk (the cave of Miracles. The great ascetic Milerappa is supposed to have performed miracles here).

 

DAY 16 - KAILASH KORA/TREK - DZUTRUL PHUK - DARCHEN

Today you will finish the kora with a 3-4 hours trek from Dzutrul phuk back to Darchen; You will across several streams and follow an impressive gorge on this trip. Along the way we are once again treated to magnificent views of Mt Kalaish. Afternoon drive to Manasarovar Lake for overnight and rest.

 

DAY 17 – MANASAROVER – PARIYANG

Drive back to Pariyang.

 

DAY 18 – PARIYANG – DONGPA

Drive back to Dongpa and rest.

 

DAY 19 – DONGPA – PEKUTSO LAKE

Today is a scenic trip to the famous lake Pekutso and Pekutso Grassland…

 

DAY 20 - PEKUTSO LAKE – KODARI /FRIENDSHIP BORDER – DHULIKHEL

After breakfast, our trip will be scenic driving back to Zhangmu town and Kodari border (Friendship Bridge), Nepal Tibet border, cross walking to Nepal side for immigration formalities and further 4 hours drive to Dhulikhel, a popular hill station for overnight.

 

DAY 21 – DHULIKHEL – BHAKTAPUR – KATHMANDU

After breakfast and morning view from Dhulikhel, we will drive to Bhaktapur or Bhadgoan for day sightseeing. Bhaktapur is one of the well preserved ancient Kingdoms of Kathmandu Valley, listed in the World Heritage Sites.

Afternoon drive to Kathmandu and check into your hotel.

 

DAY 22 – KATHMANDU

FREE day for your self-activities/shopping and walking around …

 

DAY 23 – DEPARTURE FROM KATHMANDU

After breakfast at the hotel, free time, depending your international flight time, we will transfer you to airport for your flight back home or next destination.
